'Was That Not a Show?' The Reason a Two-Day Fixture Deserved Its Status as a Authentic Test.

In a showcase on the upper level of the iconic Melbourne stadium rests a vibrant pink ensemble performed in by the entertainer. The concert in front of 100,024 fans was seen as a major hit.

You might not like his music. Perhaps you believe he is the ultimate present to music in history. Alternatively, you may hold a balanced view, acknowledging that some songs are excellent while others are terrible.

The key argument is that enjoyment can manifest in countless ways. Preferences differ. There is no universal formula to produce art or even five-day cricket.

The Unrivalled Depth of Test Cricket

The traditional format boasts incomparable variety. One struggles to think of another sport where the contest is so dictated by the environment.

The elements, the session, the red ball – the variables are numerous. Above all is the pitch.

If Test cricket is a form of art, the wicket is the foundation on which the athletes craft their legacy.

An Abstract Contest: The Melbourne Spectacle

The fourth Ashes Test between the two sides was an abstract version of cricket, the established format broken apart and stuck back together in abstract form.

This is not a justification of the pitch which produced a win and the another short match of the contest.

Leaving excessive grass on the pitch, causing numerous dismissals tumbling in less than two days, is not a fair contest between batter and bowler.

A Rich Tapestry: The Core of Test Cricket

But any idea this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be qualified as not a proper Test, is incorrect.

The long game is a rich tapestry, 2,615 parts and counting. On occasion, as seen at the MCG, the cricket ball moves excessively for the pace bowlers. Other times, it spins sharply on a spinning track. At other venues, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it bounces unevenly.

The close matches are particularly captivating owing to the time made in other matches.

Adjustment: The Real Challenge

Some factors are accepted more readily than others.

The debate in at the MCG was that the contest was skewed excessively towards the bowlers. That the best players were prevented from demonstrating their skill.

The format is about finding solutions – reading the wicket and responding accordingly. The top two individual innings were made by world-class stars. One line-up was less disciplined than the other, and thus lost.

Sheer Celebration: The Supporters' View

Try telling the fans who have experienced years of defeat that this was not entertaining.

Among the crowd of the ground, thousands made noise and created an atmosphere, producing a party atmosphere in a stronghold of sport.

There was hope as the fielding side dominated, momentum when players fought back, and pure joy when the win was achieved.

Contrasting Examples: The Range of Test Matches

The venue has previous experience with difficult wickets. Previously, a Test there featured a pitch with all the life of a a non-event.

That match was a slog, with few wickets and interminable tedium. The two-day game and that drawn affair are diametrically opposed points of the scale – one is not more the standard, yet significance can be attached to both.

At this stage into the current series, it is the two-day matches that will be most remembered in the history books.

"This isn't the death of Test cricket at all," said a former player. "Spectators who have been privileged to see these 48 hours have been experienced some genuine drama. Different entertainment."

Signs of Progress: A Glimmer of Hope

In the lead-in to this match, the captain addressed the media like a man carrying the heavy burden on his back.

The squad delivered for him, reinstating the positive demeanor to his persona.

New faces performed with vital performances. These are baby steps, not nearly enough to secure long-term success, but a starting point to build on.

In the end, this Melbourne victory is added to other memorable performances in dead rubbers.

As the fans left into a glorious Melbourne evening, the players assembled on the outfield to start their own celebrations.

Celebrate the win, men. You've earned this one.
