Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to reduce the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service announced that it currently hosts in excess of 1 billion AI videos.
Testing and Rollout
The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift coincides with a rise in AI content, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.
AI Proliferation Online
Studies have shown that almost a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.
Our research shows that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we aim to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, according to their own choices,” stated a company executive.
Scale of AI Content
TikTok shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network tagged as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 million videos are submitted to the platform daily, making AI content a minor part of its total content library.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they view by opening the content preference feature in the application and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the setting include news, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.
Platform Guidelines
Its guidelines oblige users to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of celebrities or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the app will from now on add an artificially created label to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.
Educational Initiatives
TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for professionals and institutions to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support non-profit groups dedicated to training coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
The platform has justified its safety measures, during controversy over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in Britain. It is planning to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection department in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.
A senior executive clarified that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by humans. The company reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the past year due to intervention by its AI tools.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
