The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25k award winnings to the MVT, which works to protect the Britain's grassroots music venues.

He was presented with the award on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots had in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges arising from water damage, fires and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in improving facilities and gear that helped musicians and fans.

"The concept that revenue from shows in big venues backs the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

The musician is not the first artist to contribute his honor prize money to charitable organizations.

When the band earned the prize in 1996 for their album Different Class, frontman the singer announced that the group would give their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

That year, rapper and singer she split her prize among several charities, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a grand to the center, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed better apparatus," she explained to outlets.

In recent years, the band donated their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their act, as well as other local music groups.

And winners that year they donated their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated singer Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

Recently, the MVT announced it had rescued several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in Southampton and the second in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
