RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
