Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
